Leadership development is the central domain of Gianpiero's research and practice. His work in this area builds on three assumptions.
The first is that exercising leadership engages a leader’s whole self. The second is that leaders’ thoughts, feelings and actions are constantly affected by the groups in which they operate. The third is that leadership can only be developed through experience. Meaningful leadership development, therefore, cannot be limited to the acquisition of theories and tools. It needs to increase our awareness of how personal history and aspirations shape the way we lead, and to enhance our capacity to grasp and work with overt and covert group and social forces. Such development requires opportunities to experience and examine the interplay between what we do and who we are--between how we influence groups and how we are influenced by them.
Building on this conceptual foundation, Gianpiero designs and directs leadership development programmes aimed at deepening participants' understanding of leadership, and at increasing their capacity to exercise it effectively and responsibly. These programmes engage with the cognitive, professional and overt aspects of leaders’ endeavours, as well as with their emotional, personal and covert ones. They involve a substantial experiential component, where participants have opportunity not only to think about, but also to practice and reflect upon, their leadership skills and abilities in groups.
